Chapter 3: Northern Laos
From Vientiane, journey northward through natural tourist spots like Vang Vieng, renowned for its limestone mountains and the Nam Song River. Then continue to Luang Prabang, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, rich in temples and stunning waterfalls. Conclude the trip at Huay Xai, a key border crossing back to Thailand.
Vang Vieng
Head north from Vientiane to Vang Vieng, a city famous for its natural beauty and adventure activities. Surrounded by limestone mountains and the Nam Song River, visitors can enjoy tubing, kayaking, or hiking while taking in the breathtaking scenery.
Luang Prabang
Next, travel onward to Luang Prabang, a UNESCO World Heritage Site combining history and natural wonders. Highlights include the Kuang Si Waterfall, known for its clear turquoise waters, and Wat Xieng Thong, one of the oldest and most revered temples in Laos.
Huay Xai
End the Northern Laos journey in Huay Xai, situated on the banks of the Mekong River opposite Chiang Khong, Thailand. This vital border crossing connects Northern Laos with Northern Thailand. After crossing the border, drive to Chiang Rai, about an hour away. In Chiang Rai, explore landmarks such as the White Temple (Wat Rong Khun), designed by renowned artist Chalermchai Kositpipat, and the Black House Museum (Baan Dam), an artistic showcase of raw and captivating Northern Thai culture.
