Traveling by car is one of the best ways to fully experience the beauty of Laos, whether it’s the lush mountains, the mighty Mekong River, or the tranquil local villages. CarWorld Club recommends a road trip route in Laos, divided into three parts covering the southern, central, and northern regions of the country. You’ll discover a variety of tourist attractions, including stunning waterfalls, important temples, and breathtaking natural landscapes. Get ready for an adventure as you drive through Laos and explore at your own pace.

Part 1: Southern Laos
Start your journey from Bangkok, driving on Highway 1 (Phahonyothin) and connecting to Highway 2 (Mittraphap) heading towards the northeastern region. Pass through provinces like Nakhon Ratchasima and Buriram, until you reach Ubon Ratchathani. The drive from Bangkok to Ubon Ratchathani takes about 8-9 hours, depending on traffic and rest stops.

Once in Ubon Ratchathani, continue driving to the Chong Mek border checkpoint, which is about 100 kilometers from the city. Crossing the border from Chong Mek into Pakse, Laos is straightforward. Simply prepare your travel and vehicle documents, such as your passport and vehicle papers. After crossing the border, you’ll enter southern Laos and begin exploring the city of Pakse.

Pakse :
Start your journey by crossing the border from Bangkok through Chong Mek and head to Pakse, the main city in southern Laos. It is a gateway to exploring the region’s stunning natural beauty. You can visit the Bolaven Plateau, a famous coffee-growing area with beautiful waterfalls such as Tad Fane and Tad Yeung.

Si Phan Don :
From Pakse, head south to Si Phan Don, a group of islands in the middle of the Mekong River. Here, you’ll experience the peaceful lifestyle of the Lao people and have the chance to spot the endangered Irrawaddy dolphins. Two interesting islands for relaxation are Don Deth and Don Khong, which offer a simple and beautiful atmosphere.
