On December 17, 2024, the Japanese media outlet Nikkei reported that two automotive giants, Honda Motor and Nissan Motor, are in the process of negotiating a merger to establish a holding company. The goal of this merger is to enhance their ability to produce and market vehicles, allowing them to compete more effectively with Tesla and Chinese electric vehicle manufacturers.
The plan may also involve Mitsubishi Motors, with Nissan currently being Mitsubishi’s largest shareholder, holding a 24% stake under the holding company structure.
