Why should you reduce speed when driving through a tunnel ?

Safety Tips for Driving Through Tunnels

Driving through tunnels presents a higher risk of accidents due to changes in visibility compared to driving outside. If you don’t adjust your vision properly, you might experience temporary blurriness, which increases the risk of accidents. To drive safely through a tunnel:

  • Adjust Your Vision: When entering a tunnel from a bright area, your eyes need about 6 seconds to adjust to the darker environment. Conversely, when exiting a tunnel to a brighter area, your eyes require approximately 3 seconds to readjust. If you are wearing sunglasses before entering the tunnel, remove them and blink rapidly 2-3 times to help your eyes adjust. Then, reduce your speed.
  • Reduce Speed: Drive at a reduced speed, especially when entering and exiting the tunnel. Always adhere to the speed limit signs posted.
  • Maintain Safe Distance: Avoid tailgating the vehicle in front of you. Maintain a safe distance of at least 5 meters. This will provide enough space to stop safely if the vehicle ahead suddenly halts.
  • Stay in Your Lane: Keep your vehicle centered in your lane and do not change lanes. Vehicles following you might not be able to stop in time, which could lead to accidents.
  • Do Not Stop or Park: Do not stop or park in the tunnel. If you must, turn on your hazard lights to alert other drivers to exercise caution.
  • Be Extra Cautious in Rain: During rainy conditions, be aware of slippery roads, water accumulation, and traffic congestion, all of which increase the risk of accidents. Do not use tunnels as shelter from rain, especially for motorcycles, as other drivers might not see you, leading to accidents.
