What to Do If Your Car Tire Blows Out While Driving

Tire Blowouts or Punctures Can Occur Due to Various Causes

These include expired tires, worn tread, sidewall damage, excessive heat, or driving at high speeds.

How to Recognize Symptoms:

If you suddenly hear a loud explosion or the vehicle shakes, or if you hear air escaping from the tire, it’s likely that the tire may have blown out. In such cases, follow these four steps:

  • Steer Steadily: First, stay calm and grip the steering wheel firmly. Ease off the accelerator and keep the vehicle in its lane to avoid danger to yourself and other road users.
    • Do Not Brake Suddenly: You can apply the brakes gently, but avoid sudden or hard braking, as well as using the handbrake, as this could cause the car to skid, lose control, or overturn.
    • Allow the Vehicle to Slow Gradually: Continue driving at a reduced speed, keeping an eye on the rearview mirror, and try to steer to the left lane to find a safe place to pull over.
    • Pull Over and Turn on Hazard Lights: Park the vehicle on the side of the road and turn on the hazard lights. If there are cones available, place them behind your car immediately to warn other drivers and prevent rear-end collisions.
